About this project
This project addresses the increasing risk of flash floods in Amman, exacerbated by rapid urbanization, inadequate stormwater drainage systems, and climate change impacts. Flash floods have paralyzed Amman city in the past, causing loss of lives, infrastructure damage, and heightened vulnerabilities, particularly among the most vulnerable segments of the population. In 2018, 35 people lost their lives because of flash floods and an estimated 150,000 were affected by the floods, which sheds light on the seriousness of this problem. In February of 2019, severe rainfall caused an estimated maximum flow of 658m3/s, which led to severe flooding in Downtown Amman, resulting in damages and economic losses for local businesses and shops. According to the National Centre for Security and Crisis Management (2019), floods are the most frequent natural disaster in Jordan and have caused over 395 deaths and affected over 650,000 people since 1963. The Jordanian Civil Defence estimated that in the period between 1981-2012, the total economic losses caused by reported natural disasters (593 records) has reached an estimated US$29 million. With weather patterns indicating a high likelihood of recurring floods and storms in 2024, urgent action is imperative. In 2022, it was estimated that $7.5 billion is needed for mitigation interventions alone in Jordan. The project is aligned with national strategies emphasizing rainwater harvesting as a sustainable solution and recognizes the critical ne…
