About this project

The Green Climate Fund (GCF) Readiness and Preparatory Programme supports National Designated Authorities to build climate management capacity. \nSouth Africa is a contributor to global climate change with GHG emissions resulting mainly from energy production and consumption. The country is heavily reliant on coal-based fossil fuel energy, with more than 90% of electricity being produced mainly from this source. This dependence on coal continues to strain the country’s efforts to reduce GHG emissions. Simultaneously, South Africa has a high level of Renewable Energy potential. In line with the national commitment to transition to a low carbon economy, 17 800 MW of the 2030 target of newly generated power to be developed are expected to be from renewable energy sources.\nUNOPS supplies grant management support to the Green Climate Fund to improve resilience to climate change.\n
