About this project

DEFIS is a 10-year program (2018-2027) of the Ministry of Agriculture of Madagascar, financed by IFAD. The objective of the project is to contribute to strengthening and securing the production base of 320,000 family farms in a context of climate change, connecting them to production and marketing support services in order to sustainably transform the country's agricultural sector and rural economy. \n\nDEFIS operates in eight regions in the south and central-east of Madagascar and has selected eight value chains in these regions. In a first project signed in 2022, UNOPS supported the project for the implementation of sustainable and resilient infrastructure through the installation or construction of three solar pumping systems and the rehabilitation of approximately 17 km of rural roads.\n\n\nIn this new project, UNOPS develops four irrigated areas in the Manakara region, in addition to the current project. These will be the areas of Masiry, Vapaky-Mahety, Vohilava and Marohaka. \n\nThe works include the design and implementation of pumping stations including supply and installation of pumps, civil engineering works, solar fields and accessories and irrigation networks, and the rehabilitation of buffer basins.\n
