About this project
The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) faces unique challenges due to its geographical dispersion and vulnerability to climate change. The country's transport infrastructure is crucial, yet underdeveloped, leading to a reliance on personal vehicles due to the lack of a public transport system. This has resulted in a growing problem of abandoned vehicles that exacerbate environmental and health hazards due to the lack of a regulatory framework for vehicle management and disposal. The inflow of imported, often near-end-of-life vehicles, due to limited import restrictions, compounds these issues. These vehicles, while enhancing mobility, also pose risks of increased emissions, poor fuel economy, and environmental degradation.\n\nThe objective of the project focuses on developing a Motorization Management Diagnostic and Implementation Plan for the Federated States of Micronesia. This initiative aims to enhance the management of the vehicle fleet, bolster environmental sustainability, and improve the resilience of the transportation infrastructure against climate change and natural disasters. By adopting a life-of-vehicle approach, the strategy will oversee motor vehicles throughout their lifecycle—from design and production to post-production and eventual scrappage—while also considering the integration of fuel quality and vehicle systems.
