About this project

The Resilient and Strategic Transport Operational Enhancement Project for Malawi has the development objective to provide safe and climate-resilient transport connectivity in the Lower Shire. Component 1: Resilient and Safe Transport Infrastructure Improvement will rehabilitate the Thabwa–Chikwawa–Bangula stretch of M1 and implement a phased upgrade of the Thabwa–Chitseko–Seven stretch of S152, improve selected markets along M1, implement systematic road safety interventions, and prepare feasibility studies for two strategic feeder roads. Sub-component 1.1 will rehabilitate approximately 90 kilometers of M1, including pavement strengthening for a 20-year design life, elevation of low sections, reconstruction of four bridges to withstand a 100-year flood return period with appropriate catchment debris management, replacement and reinforcement of undersized culverts to a 50-year return period, and stabilization of riverbanks, supported by climate-resilient design and supervision services and resettlement actions. Sub-component 1.2 will phase the upgrade of roughly 60 kilometers of S152 by reconstructing one main bridge to a 100-year flood return period, replacing and reinforcing culverts to a 50-year return period, stabilizing riverbanks, and financing climate-resilient design and supervision services and resettlement actions. Sub-component 1.3 will develop safer, climate-resilient and gender-sensitive market facilities along M1, including energy-efficient lighting, climate-re…
