Electro-mechanical rehabilitation of HPP Fierza

About this project

The Project includes rehabilitation measures to be carried out at the Fierza hydropower plant (HPP) in northern Albania. Fierza HPP is one of the three large state-owned hydropower plants along the Drin Cascade: Fierza, Komani and Vau I Dejes. With an installed capacity of 500 MW and an average annual generation of 1,328 GWh, it generates about a quarter of the domestically generated electricity. There have been insufficient investments in the states power generation infrastructure in recent decades, with the result that important maintenance and expansion investments have not been made. The Fierza HPP was built more than 40 years ago and is now in a precarious condition, sometimes causing supply shortages with significant negative effects on the economy. Generation losses have to be compensated by expensive electricity imports from abroad and additional greenhouse gas emissions. The project is expected to address the most pressing problems regarding two severely outdated turbines and four generators and thus lead to an extension of the HPPs lifetime by at least 30 years as well as to an increase in the HPPs reliability, efficiency and capacity.
