Strengthening Social and Economic Infrastructure in the Goto District of Beira

About this project

Goto is an informal settlement of the city of Beira, located on the eastern side of the so-called Basin No. 3. along the Chiveve River. The settlement was built on public land that was not originally intended for residential development. The settlement has existed for almost 40 years and most of the buildings were constructed about 15 years ago. Currently, an estimated 13,000 people live in the settlement. In addition, there is a considerable number of people who work formally and informally in and around the settlement. With FC support, the projects Measures for Climate Adaptation Beira (BMZ No. 2011.9733.0), Green Urban Infrastructure in Beira Municipality (BMZ No. 2016.6731.0) and Accompanying Measure to Support Municipalities (BMZ No. 2022.7024.7) have contributed to a considerable reduction in the risk of flooding in Goto settlement. In the course of the FC module: Strengthening infrastructure and economic framework conditions in the Goto settlement in Mozambique (BMZ No. 2022.6778.9), the living conditions of the population in the settlement as well as their protection from climate-related extreme events shall be improved. This is to be achieved by strengthening public infrastructure in the settlement. The upgrading of the Goto district is also intended to contribute to the sustainable safeguarding of the flood protection function of the Chiveve basin.
