About this project

The north of Namibia is particularly dry, water scarcity threatens the populations drinking water supply. Population growth and climate change are exacerbating the situation. Namibia is endeavouring to increase the drinking water supply for the population in northern Namibia. To this end, as many different sources as possible are to be utilised - the still insufficiently known deep Ohangwena aquifer could also be included. In order to ensure the careful and sustainable utilization of the groundwater resource, the BGR is supporting the responsible Ministry for Agriculture, Water and Land Reform (MAWLR) in improving their groundwater management. The objective of the project is: The MAWLR is utilizing its improved technical capacities for sustainable and climate-sensitive management of the Ohangwena aquifer system in northern Namibia. The technical advisory measures are primarily aimed at developing the capacity and methods of the MAWLR and selected sector institutions (e.g. the water supplier NamWater). The transfer of knowledge includes the development of capacities for qualitative and quantitative groundwater monitoring and management, energy-efficient groundwater extraction and a pilot project for artificial groundwater recharge. The target group are the approximately 40 specialists and managers of the MAWLR and - where appropriate - of NamWater. Almost a third of Namibias population lives in northern Namibia (approx. 850000 people). This is the indirect target group whose…
