About this project

The aim of the project is to provide clean drinking water by constructing 25 wells operated by hand pumps, to improve the hygiene through training and to sustainably reduce conflicts arising from the close coexistence of people and wild animals. The target population lives in the Lupande Game Management Area bordering the South Luangwa National Park. Currently they have to travel long distances to fetch mostly dirty water from water holes which they share with wild animals, which not only leads to the contamination of water sources but also to injuries and deaths occurring regularly. In order to protect the population, their homes, livestock and agricultural land from accidents and destruction by wild animals, the population is provided with simple and efficient methods for protection. Wildlife-proof granaries will be set up to protect the harvest and improve the food situation for the families. In addition, six people will be trained as Village Game Scouts for the protection of the target group and the animals. A comprehensive educational program for young people is intended to bring about a lasting change in thinking among the population to promote a longterm peaceful coexistence of people and wildlife. A handbook for the prevention of human-wildlife conflict, developed as part of the project, equips authorities, villages, game scouts, schools and other interested parties with practical methods for peaceful interaction with wildlife.
