About this project

The aim of the measure is for 1,200 farmers in three northern districts of Sierra Leone to apply improved cassava production and processing methods, increase their household income and food security and strengthen the protection of their children, which will also indirectly benefit 6,000 household members. The 30 farmer-based organizations (FBOs) in which the farmers are organized receive training and improve their capacities for inclusive management. They are also being strengthened in cassava production, post-harvest handling, processing and marketing, and access to low-interest financing for FBOs is being created. The focus is on equipping 5 selected FBOs per district with processing units that enable the further processing of cassava into gari. To this end, business plans are being developed and profitable approaches established. All FBOs and their members will benefit from the linkage with the private sector for further processing and marketing of cassava. In addition, farmers will be sensitized and supported in taking measures to ensure the well-being of their children. At a structural level, this also includes training child welfare committees in child protection and referral pathways. Local partners are also strengthened in their operative capacities and political advocacy work in the cassava value chain.
