About this project

The aim of the project is to improve food security and the capacities for self-sufficiency of 180 smallholder families in nine villages in the municipality of Coripata, Bolivia, and to promote the self-empowerment of smallholders through involvement in self-governed smallholder organisations. This is achieved by switching from a predominantly monocultural farming system to biodiverse agroforestry systems, in which both cash crops and products for subsistence are grown. This transition is supported by theoretical and practical knowledge transfer on the management of agroforestry systems and the sustainable use of natural resources, as well as the improvement of capacities in relation to the management of self-governed smallholder organisations for the promotion of agroforestry systems and the processing and marketing of their products. By establishing local stakeholder networks consiting of smallholders, community organisations and local government authorities, the participation of smallholders in decision-making processes is also strengthened, creating improved framework conditions for sustainable cultivation systems in the region in the long term.
