About this project
Based on the results of project P4996, the development of sustainable tourism at Lake Hovsgol will be established and expanded to include a component of regional value creation. Waste management will be supplemented by targeted measures, environmental education will be expanded thematically and extended to the entire Alag Erdene Suum. A concept against uncontrolled waste disposal sites is being established to ensure their proper disposal and recycling. A hospitality training program opens new job opportunities for the largely nomadic population in the local touristic businesses. An already operating dairy cooperative produces yoghurt etc. from yak milk, is being empowered and expanded in order to market products to local tourism businesses. A new cooperative is being set up that operates greenhouses in Hatgal and produces vegetables that are also marketed to tourism businesses. All three measures provide additional income during the tourist season, reduce the import of labor and products into the region and increases regional value creation. Sustainability of the measures is achieved by adapting the existing Green Star Certification with corresponding new criteria for the procurement of local products such as milk and vegetables. Networking and communication measures in the region and beyond will anchor the project results in the long term. The local executing agency EcoDevshilt can build further capacities through the project.
