Transition to organic coconut palm cultivation and introduction of coconut oil production by the members of a cooperative in Agusan del Sur

About this project

As part of the previous project to the proposed project, the farmers of a local cooperative were supported in their transition to organic rice cultivation. As part of a follow-up project, the cooperative would like to professionalize its marketing of organic products and combine this with awareness-raising measures for the production and consumption o organically grown food items in the surrounding communities. In addition, the cooperatives coconut farmers are now to be supported in their transition to organic farming. Low prices on the world market make it difficult for the farmers to live off the income from their coconut production. By setting up a production facility for the manufacture of coconut oil on the cooperatives premises, the farmers should be enabled to generate added value from their product. Furthermore the soil quality should be improved by converting the cultivation of coconut palms to mixed cultivation. The cooperative will support the farmers in diversifying their cultivation areas in the long term by setting up a tree nursery.
