About this project

Adopting a holistic approach, multi-sectoral interventions are enhancing the resilience and livelihoods of 16 fishing communities on the shores of Lake Victoria in the districts of Mukono and Buvuma in Uganda. The primary target group are women groups, who play a major role in planning, implementation and monitoring, both as beneficiaries and as facilitators. Access to safe water and sanitation is ensured on remote island communities through context-adapted innovative technologies and complemented by strengthening local capacities for the sustainable use of WASH facilities. The concept of community and participatory disaster risk reduction empowers communities to take control of their own development to break the cycle of aid dependency and promote indigenous knowledge and best practices. By promoting legal fishing practices and other income-generating activities, the project supports sustainable livelihoods for fishing communities. Workshops and awareness-raising measures strengthen the communities in the areas of human rights and gender and contribute to improving health through good nutrition and hygiene practices.
