About this project

Human rights defenders (HRDs) are exposed to considerable risks in Brazil. In particular, people who campaign for the defence of land and environmental rights, the rights of ethnic groups or the LGBTQ community are persecuted, threatened with death, criminalised or subjected to defamation campaigns. The project aims to contribute to the protection of HRDs, strengthen civil society organisations and social movements against threats and exert pressure on the Brazilian state to combat the structural causes of violence. The direct target group are HRDs in a total of around 220 communities threatened by acute human rights violations. Measures include documenting human rights violations, helping victims by providing legal, psychological and other support, combating a culture of impunity that seeks to conceal systematic violations of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and raising the profile of HRDs at local, regional and international level.
