About this project
Fishing is of central importance for the livelihood of a large part of the population. However, the traditional fishing families are among the poorest sections of the population. They have always been neglected by the state, which is reflected, among other things, in the lack of support for their economic and social living conditions and the lack of protection for their fishing zones. The ever-increasing industrialisation of large-scale fishing is threatening their livelihoods, as are the ever-expanding mining industry and the drastic increase in piracy. The aim of the project is to enable traditional fishermen and women to campaign for the protection of their traditional fishing areas and to defend their way of life in the interests of environmental and climate justice. A total of around 13,000 traditional fishermen and women in 29 communities and two nature reserves are being reached. Key project measures include on-site visits and meetings to draw up consultation protocols and fisheries agreements in the communities supported, seminars at state level on climate change and COP 30 as well as lobby meetings with government agencies from various departments at local and state level.
