About this project

A rich oil deposit was discovered in the project region in 2007. Since then, the government has been making great efforts to develop and export the oil. Thousands of people have had to be resettled and ecosystems are at risk as the oil fields themselves, as well as the infrastructure affect natural areas and national parks. The large-scale project has been criticised locally, nationally and globally due to human rights concerns, the immense risks, climate change and the necessary socio-ecological transformation. Despite these concerns, the project is likely to be realised. The project holder works with the target group to ensure that the consequences for the affected population and the environment are as acceptable as possible.
