About this project

South Africa is one of the richest, but also one of the most socially unequal countries on the African continent. During and after the COVID-19 pandemic, the precarious situations in which many people live, especially in informal settlements, became particularly clear. The project contributes to the transformation of such disadvantaged neighbourhoods into independent communities whose residents have access to basic services, opportunities to generate income, adequate housing and security of tenure. At the same time, the project supports adaptation to climate change. Among other things, exchange meetings, workshops, training and advocacy measures are organised. In addition to the members of savings groups in the informal settlements, the leaders of grassroots groups and the responsible local authorities also benefit from the housing and settlement development measures implemented in the project.
