About this project
In the project region, coffee, bananas, cassava, corn and beans are cultivated, mainly for subsistence and for sale. In addition, small-scale goat, chicken and pig farming contributes to livelihoods. Agricultural productivity and family incomes are generally low and hardly allow for investments in improvement measures. Cliimate change, soil degradation and high pest infestation further reduce productivity. Due to a lack of storage facilities and the high level of poverty, most agricultural products are sold directly after the harvest, when prices are at their lowest. In addition, seed for the next season is inadequately stored and has to be bought again, which generates additional costs. Malnutrition and infectious diseases, which can be traced back to a lack of hygiene and health care, affect the health of the families. The project contributes to improving the socio-economic resilience and well-being of the smallholder target group. The project objectives include securing and increasing the agricultural production (arable farming, small animal husbandry) of the smallholder target households, improving their economic and health situation. Specific measures focus on training, support for the target groups and advice on relevant topics, as well as activities relating to project planning, monitoring and evaluation, safeguarding, networking and knowledge exchange.
