About this project

Living conditions in El Salvador are precarious for many people in both rural and urban areas. The poverty rate in the Central American country is one of the highest in Latin America. Large-scale urban projects and interventions to promote tourism are an acute threat to city dwellers and their livelihoods. In addition, a large part of the population in El Salvador lives in risk zones and is threatened by the increasing effects of climate change. The target group of the project is the population living in poverty and extreme poverty in cities and rural regions of El Salvador. The project focuses on access to housing and the creation of an inclusive and ecologically sustainable living environment. To this end, measures are being implemented in the areas of community organisation, empowering young people and young adults, improving living conditions in historic city centres, strengthening housing cooperatives and disseminating the model, as well as strengthening the climate resilience of communities and promoting ecosystem-based approaches. Measures include training/education, networking and exchange processes, counselling and the construction of prototypes for self-help-oriented, affordable housing and sustainable, climate-friendly construction methods.
