About this project

The project for the conservation of coastal ecosystems in the Gulf of Fonseca in Honduras aims to preserve the regions natural environment while ensuring the long-term livelihoods of the local population. The core focus is on the sustainable management of the El Jicarito, Los Delgaditos, and San Lorenzo protected areas to safeguard both ecological conditions and the livelihoods of traditional fishing and shellfish-gathering communities. Three main priorities are pursued: First, the collaboration between governmental and civil society actors is strengthened through the establishment and enhancement of inter-institutional networks, ensuring the responsible management of natural resources. Second, the ecological state of the mangrove forests and lagoon system in El Jicarito will be improved through sustainable management practices and continuous monitoring, contributing to the long-term stability of biodiversity and fish stocks. Third, the economic and organizational capacities of local fishing and shellfish groups will be enhanced. Through professionalization, improved access to financial services, and sustainable product marketing, they will be able to increase income while conserving resources. Ultimately, the project seeks to achieve the overarching goal of maintaining a healthy coastal ecosystem that provides vital ecosystem services and supports the sustainable development of the region.
