About this project

The war in Tigray (2020-2022) has had a devastating impact on the regions water supply. Infrastructure was deliberately destroyed, spare parts depots looted or destroyed, WASH committees disbanded, and public services disrupted. As a result, millions of people lost access to clean drinking water. The consequences for the local population are dramatic. The project will address this situation and restore water supply in 13 particularly affected districts of Tigray. By repairing 600 water points, 132,000 people will have access to clean water. To support long-term functionality, WASH committees will be established or reactivated and trained. A system for accessing spare parts will be set up and expertise in repairs and maintenance will be developed. Together, these measures will ensure the long-term functionality of the infrastructure. At the same time, community members will build their awareness of hygiene and sanitation through workshops and public events. A broad-based education campaign will inform the population about important WASH practices. WASH awareness raising activities will also be implemented in 40 schools, with an additional focus on promoting better menstrual hygiene. A total of 200,000 people will benefit from the WASH awareness raising activities. Rebuilding the water infrastructure and supporting local engagement are key steps for sustainable development and a sign of peace in a region marked by crises.
