From Waste to Opportunity: Sustainable Solutions for the Ein el Hilweh Camp and the City of Saida

About this project

The project establishes a sustainable waste management system in Ein el Hilweh Camp and Saida to improve hygiene, the environment, and income opportunities. 200 gardening households receive training in waste separation and are provided with color-coded bins. A central waste disposal facility is set up to collect, sort, and recycle waste. Organic waste is processed in a new composting facility on nearby agricultural land. The produced bio-compost supports rooftop gardens and is sold. Environmental actions, training, and campaigns promote exchange between camp residents and Saida inhabitants, strengthen social cohesion, and raise awareness of sustainable waste management. The womens cooperative operating the system ensures its long-term stability through the sale of bio-compost and rooftop garden products. Training, infrastructure development, and community initiatives secure lasting environmental benefits and economic stability.
