About this project

The project region is the classic mining region on the Bolivian highlands, which is characterized on the one hand by a significant share in the creation of Bolivian export revenues through the extraction of large quantities of raw materials and on the other hand by the highest poverty indices in Bolivia. Mining causes enormous damage to the environment and therefore also to health, but at the same time the local population is heavily dependent on the income it generates. This makes it difficult to take open action against mining activities and a cautious and mediated approach must be taken. The women employed in mining suffer greatly from discrimination and violence. The project aims to implement concrete measures to reduce water contamination from mining residues, to work with civil society actors at local level to raise awareness among the population and implement concrete measures for a cleaner environment, and to strengthen the severely disadvantaged female mineworkers and their organizations to demand their rights and equitable participation in decision-making processes. The projects target groups are mine workers (with a particular focus on women), cooperative representatives, smallholder farmers, young people and neighborhood committees. Measures include coordination meetings, further training, public hearings, health and reforestation campaigns, the development of education materials and radio programmes.
