About this project
The project region was recently hit hard by natural disasters (earthquakes, tropical storms, hurricanes). In the communities of the project area, 60 % of the inhabitants live in poor-quality houses and are therefore exposed to a high risk of further natural disasters. Traditional ways of life, production and construction practices are being lost in parts, reducing the resilience of the communities. Government support programmes are mostly assistance-oriented and promote dependency and control instead of self-organisation and autonomy. The direct beneficiaries of the project are around 660 organised residents from ten communities in the state of Guerrero (predominantly rural, indigenous communities). The objectives relate to the planning and implementation of integral risk management and improving access to adequate and safe housing, building on local knowledge and adapted, sustainable (earth) construction methods. It is also about improving the political framework and raising awareness of the needs of the rural population with regard to the right to housing, fair land distribution and a healthy living environment. The measures include participatory analyses, (practical) workshops and training and participatory planning and construction processes (including 28 housing units) as well as the development of materials and publications.
