About this project

The project area in the Bolivian Amazon region is sparsely populated and dominated by migrants from the highlands. The population lives off self-sufficiency, with the Brazil nut harvest remaining important. Climate change and population growth are making hunting and fishing more difficult, so agricultural production is becoming more important. Traditional slash-and-burn farming leads to soil erosion and forest fires. Agroforestry systems offer a sustainable alternative. Women play an important role but continue to face discrimination. The project aims to strengthen the agriculture of smallholder families through diversified and climate-change-resistant production systems, to support the banana producers association and to strengthen grassroots civil society organisations in their efforts to preserve the forests biodiversity and their natural livelihoods. The target group is smallholder families and their organisations, women and grassroots civil society organisations. Key project measures include workshops and other types of training and exchange events, participation in a training cycle on agroforestry systems, provision of materials and tools for setting up agroforestry systems, advice and support for producers, organisational support for the banana producers association, raising awareness of environmental issues, political lobbying and the creation of alliances.
