About this project

Smallholder and indigenous agriculture in the lowlands of Bolivia is increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change, and agricultural production systems urgently need to be changed to become more resilient. At the same time, the use of traditional slash-and-burn systems with little diversification promotes deforestation of the rainforest by impoverishing soil fertility and creating a need for ever more clearing. Slash-and-burn practices are becoming increasingly difficult to control due to rising drought levels, often resulting in larger forest fires. The project aims to improve agricultural production and food security in indigenous communities through the dissemination, establishment and management of dynamic agroforestry systems and the development of community-level life plans. Legislation at municipal level to protect forests and water sources and to promote cocoa and coffee cultivation in agroforestry systems. Diversification of production systems, improvement of soil quality and increase in income in seven smallholder communities. The projects target group is indigenous producers who are trained to become multipliers Indigenous and smallholder families and their communities and organisations The project measures include training and supporting indigenous multipliers in the establishment and management of diversified agroforestry systems, who then pass on their knowledge in their communities developing life plans for the sustainable management of territories…
