About this project
After 19 years of rule by the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) party, Bolivia finds itself in a deep crisis, manifested in high inflation, foreign currency and fuel shortages, high deforestation rates and a loss of trust in state institutions. With the presidential and parliamentary elections, the MAS has been completely stripped of its power. The future president, who was elected in the run-off election on 19 October 2025, is focusing, like his defeated rival, on increased exploitation of mineral resources and further expansion of the agricultural industry, which is likely to further exacerbate dependence on exports and environmental destruction and lead to new conflicts and human rights violations. The project aims to raise awareness among Bolivian society of the problems of environmental destruction and related human rights violations, the causes of the economic crisis in dependence on extractivism, and to promote active social debate. The project is aimed at those affected by mining and natural gas exploration and extraction, human rights defenders and environmental activists, as well as allied organisations and the general public in Bolivia. The planned measures include research and analysis on the economic crisis and raw material exploitation, the production of publications, communication campaigns, the organisation of events, support for communities and human rights defenders, and training in human rights and self-protection mechanisms.
