Legal advice for communities and social movements in Brazil

About this project

The Brazilian constitution formally offers the population a variety of opportunities for political participation and intervention. In reality, however, the political participation of marginalised sections of the population is severely restricted, on the one hand by the economic and political elites undermining it in order to assert their own interests, and on the other hand by the rural population, which is often affected by injustice, lacking knowledge about the opportunities available to them to exert influence. The project aims to defend the land rights of rural communities involved in conflicts, promote agricultural reform and improve access to state social welfare. Approximately 7,000 families are reached directly and 12,000 indirectly. Project measures include courses for lay lawyers, legal support in land conflicts, further training for affected communities in the field of human rights, filing lawsuits, accompanying court proceedings, publicising conflicts to the general public and developing protocols for prior, free and informed consultation (ILO 169).
