About this project

The department of Olancho is known for its large territorial extension, its warm climate and fertile soils, however, it is one of the departments with the largest land concessions, with agrarian conflict, permanent threats of hydroelectric projects, increasing open-pit mining, illegal logging and timber trade, and violence against people who oppose the installation of extractive projects. The food production is based on cultivation techniques that do not favour self-consumption and that are based on technologies that contaminate the livelihoods of the population, due to the excessive use of chemical substances (fungicides, pesticides, chemical fertilisers of different kinds), greatly affecting the environment and the quality of life of the people. The project will develop a comprehensive accompaniment strategy for the Olancho Environmental Movement in Defence of Life (MAODVI). CEHPRODEC brings to this initiative the main lessons learned from its previous work in other territories, with the support of CAFOD and other donors. Based on primary evidence, the integral ecology approach will be promoted, understood in the local context of the target groups, as the connection between their community empowerment, their protagonism in demanding their rights from decision-makers and the implementation of agro-ecological initiatives that contribute to their economic and social autonomy.
