About this project
The conflict that broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to mass displacement and thousands of casualties. As of October 2024, the conflict has forcibly displaced over 8.1 million people within and 2.9 million outside Sudan (OCHA). Many populations are experiencing secondary or tertiary displacements due to escalation in conflict and intense rains and floods throughout July and August 2024. Approximately 54% of internally displaced persons (IDPs) are female, 52% are children under the age of 18, a quarter (26%) are children under five and 28% of IDPs are female children under 18 (IOM). Targeted and indiscriminate attacks, destruction of civilian infrastructure, and violence are making conflict-affected population lives difficult. Since the start of the conflict in April 2023 and another RSF attack in Medani (Al Jazeera State) in December 2023, Gedaref and White Nile have seen a massive increase in IDPs. IDPs are hosted by their families, in-laws, and friends or are received in different places, including schools and mosques. Some gather in informal settlements and markets which provide little to no shelter, dignity, or access to water and sanitation facilities.
