About this project

The global challenge of deforestation requires strong and equitable governance systems, on both the demand and supply sides. ClientEarth’s project promotes strong regulations across major producer and consumer markets, compelling behavioural change through legal compliance, increased rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities (IPLCs) and incentives for deforestation-free products. ClientEarth’s project supports national actors in Africa – primarily civil society organisations (CSOs), IPLCs, women, and governments – to engage in national law reform to enhance their long-term role in strong forest stewardship related to (i) forest-risk commodities (timber, cocoa and minerals) and (ii) carbon markets. ClientEarth’s project will also engage with Chinese authorities, including law enforcement and environmental regulators, and large Chinese companies on the global deforestation footprint of China’s overseas trade and investment. The project will leverage international engagement and national implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework, to create momentum for stewardship of some of the world’s most important remaining forests.
