About this project

AFS is a humanitarian multi-donor pooled fund designed to meet critical needs of the of crisis-affected population in Syria while strengthening recovery and resilience to support the country’s transition. AFS was originally established in December 2022 as the Aid Fund for Northern Syria (AFNS) to address urgent needs and critical gaps in northern Syria through a localised approach while serving as the contingency mechanism for the UN OCHA Syria Cross-border Humanitarian Fund (SCHF). Following the fall of the Assad regime in December 2024, AFS has evolved into a nationwide humanitarian fund with the objective of catalysing locally driven recovery, strengthening civil society leadership, and enabling the Humanitarian-Development-Peacebuilding Nexus after over a decade of conflict. AFS has thus far launched four allocations worth $97 million, reaching 3.85 million people; three Regular Allocations targeting multi-sectoral programming- this includes projects in newly accessible areas in2025, and one Special Allocation launched 11 days after the February 2024 earthquakes. To achieve sustainable outcomes, AFS emphasises localisation and prioritises the strength and expertise of Syrian organisations – 75.5% of all AFS funding to date has been directed to Syrian NGOs.
