About this project
Beekeeping is a critical livelihood activity in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs), particularly in Makueni and Taita Taveta Counties. Despite high potential, smallholder beekeepers face persistent challenges including limited access to reliable markets, inadequate modern beehives, weak aggregation systems, and inconsistent quality handling. These constraints suppress farmer incomes and limit the ability of aggregators to meet growing demand for pure honey. The project aims to develop a sustainable, inclusive, and locally anchored apiculture value chain in Makueni and Taita Taveta Counties that improves incomes for smallholder beekeepers, strengthens local manufacturing capacity, and promotes skills development among youth.
