About this project
The proposed project introduces community-based innovative flood protection measures that leverage local resources and knowledge toeffectively manage flood risks. The solutions include last-mile early warning information dissemination based on predetermined triggers and reforestation/afforestation for riverbank protection against floods in selected hotspots. This is coupled with the eco-hydrological benefits of riverbank reforestation using indigenous, drought-resistant trees, which enhance soil stability and water infiltration, thereby reducing flood risks in a sustainable manner. The combined effect of timely warnings and nature-based defenses creates a synergistic approach to flood resilience. The proposed solutions aim to fulfill the following broad anticipatory action objective in addition to a resilience objective: 1. Enhance access to early warning information: Increase households' and communities' access to timely and actionable early warning information, empowering them to make informed decisions related to flood risk management. Currently early warning messages are only disseminated through mobile phone text messages. However, gaps remain in the last mile communities. We aim to work with these communities to see how we can best ensure messaging will also reach them in the future. In thepilot we will test ways to reach these communities and form recommendations for a more inclusive early warning system in different parts of Somalia. 2. Safeguard lives and assets bef…
