OGB-SORO KERA Empowering rural women

About this project

In Mali, the impact of climate change has been heavily felt over the past 40 years with increased rates of desertification and flooding and serious consequences on food security (availability and accessibility of food, etc.). The rural women in Mali are feeling the effects of climate change in their daily lives. They find that once-reliable crops no longer grow or that the frequency of rains destroys their ability to earn a living, and with less access to resources than men, they find it harder to bounceback. Yet they know what needs to be done to help their households and communities adapt to climate change and build resilience. In addition to this, other challenges that affect their capacity include lack of access to credit, water and storage infrastructure, equipment and tools,and agricultural inputs such as organic fertilizers. The project Soro Kera is in the Segou Region in Mali, specifically in the Baraouéli Circle and implemented with Oxfam’s local partner, the Association des Femmes Pasteuresde Baraouéli (AFPB). AFPB’s members have benefited from support with other projects (2 larger Danish/Belgium cooperation projects) in terms of savings mobilization, training for market gardening activities as well as local milk production. With the support of Oxfam, women have benefited from seeds andmarket gardening tools, but also from literacy sessions and training in farming techniques.
