CO-Climate Resilience and Peace

About this project

Strengthening Climate Adaptation and Promoting Peaceful Co-existence in Climate-Stressed Cross-Border Communities of Togdheer Region is a resilience-building project implemented by Oxfam in Somalia to address the interconnected challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, conflict, and economic vulnerability affecting pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in Togdheer Region. Theproject targets communities in Burao, Oodweyne, and Buhoodle districts, where recurrent droughts, shrinking natural resources, livestock diseases, and cross-border tensions continue to undermine livelihoods and social stability. Building on the achievements of anearlier phase, the project adopts an integrated approach that combines ecosystem restoration, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable livestock services, financial inclusion, and community peacebuilding. The project will restore degraded rangelands, promote Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (FMNR), strengthen early warning systems, and improve livestock health through market-based veterinary service models. It will also enhance household resilience by supporting Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), linking communities to formal financial institutions, and providing business support to women and youth entrepreneurs. To address environmentaldegradation and reduce dependence on charcoal, the project will promote energy-efficient cooking technologies and community awareness on sustainable natural resource management.
