CO-MHM Reemi Somaliland

About this project

Menstrual health is essential to gender equality and the wellbeing of all people who menstruate. Yet the needs of millions continueto go unmet, this is especially true in high severity contexts. The women and girls we areworking with are facing extreme discrimination and vulnerability becauseof their gender and the fragile context in which they live. This isexacerbated by the lack of education on menstrual and reproductivehealth, lack of access to menstrual products and societal norms that makethis area taboo. This has grave repercussions. Reemi's Menstrual HygieneManagement (MHM) solutions are low cost and culturally sensitiveinnovations that can help address some of the issues: intuitive (notrequiring literacy), antibacterial (combat infections), washing bags enableusers to clean reusable products in hygienic manner, limiting need forwaste infrastructure and water use, drying bags ensure a discrete way todrymenstrual products, and simple education modules to reinforcepositive attitudes towards women and girls, and menstrual hygiene. Toensure effective support for women and girls, Oxfam will scale Reemi’sMHM products. Improving access to menstrual products and encouragingcultural changes in how menstruation is discussed and viewed. Learningswill be will be valuable in gaining insights into how toensure adequate andculturally sensitive access to MHM products across different humanitariancontexts. Learnings will be shared widely.
