About this project

Borno State is currently experiencing one of its largest cholera outbreaks in recent years, with over 14,700 suspected cases and 115 deaths reported as of June 2026. Transmission remains active, particularly in densely populated urban settlements, IDP camps, hostcommunities, and hard-to-reach areas such as Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Konduga. These areas remain highly vulnerabledue to population movement, inadequate access to safe water, poor sanitation infrastructure, overcrowding, and weak hygiene practices. In response, Oxfam proposes an integrated cholera prevention and response intervention aimed at reducing transmission, strengthening community-level preparedness, and improving access to safe WASH services. The intervention will combine community engagement, rapid response mechanisms, and WASH improvements in both communities and health facilities, complementing the Government-led response.
