About this project
Context: Uganda is currently facing a significant public health emergency following the confirmation of an outbreak of Ebola VirusDisease (EVD) caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain on 15 May 2026. The outbreak is linked to ongoing transmission in Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), where multiple clusters of cases and deaths, including infections among healthcare workers, have been reported. Given Uganda's extensive and porous border with the DRC, high levels of cross-border trade, refugee movements, mining-related migration, and informal population movements, the risk of sustained importation and local transmission remains extremely high. The Ministry of Health In Uganda has classified 37 districts bordering DRC and major refugee-hosting districts as very high-risk areas due to their proximity to the outbreak epicenter, high population density, significant mobility patterns, and presence of vulnerable populations. These districts collectively host an estimated 12 million people, including over 2 million refugees and asylum seekers. Refugee-hosting districts such as Yumbe, Terego, Madi-Okollo, Adjumani, Obongi, Kikuube, Kyegegwa, Kamwenge, Kiryandongo , and Isingiro have continued to receive new arrivals from DRC and South Sudan, coupled with porous entries/movement, placing increasing strain on already overstretched social services and public health systems.
