CO- Integrated lifesaving assistance

About this project

The project provides integrated lifesaving assistance to drought-affected households, internally displaced people and vulnerable host communities in Galkayo, Puntland, where prolonged drought, conflict, displacement and economic shocks have severely affected foodsecurity, livelihoods, access to safe water and sanitation, and protection. Galkayo is experiencing a complex humanitarian crisis driven by repeated rainfall failures, livestock losses, displacement, conflict and economic pressures. The OxfamRapid Needs Assessment conducted in July 2026 found that 65% of households lacked sufficient access to food, with many households surviving on two mealsa day and increasingly using negative coping strategies such as selling productive livestock, borrowing money and accumulating debt. Water and sanitation needs are also severe. Only around 40% of households have access to piped water, while 65% lack household latrines, contributing to open defecation and increased public health risks. Rising fuel prices have also increased the cost of water,making safe water less affordable for vulnerable households. Protection risks have increased alongside displacement and the deterioration of livelihoods. Women and girls face heightened risks of gender-based violence, particularly when accessing water and sanitation facilities. Limited community-based protection mechanisms and the distance to specialised protection and GBV services create additional barriers for survivors and vulnerable groups.…
