About this project
The local private sector in Egypt's citrus industry faces several significant obstacles that impede productivity and sustainability. Inefficient irrigation practices, such as traditional flood irrigation, lead to excessive water usage and inefficient water distribution. This not only wastes precious water resources but also causes salts to accumulate in the soil through evaporation, degrading soil quality and harming crop productivity. The RootGrow Cluster Project aims to implement innovative agricultural practices in the field of citrus that address climate change and optimise water use. By adopting new rootstocks and improving irrigation practices, overall productivity and fruit quality will see significant enhancements. This, in turn, will boost economic growth through increased exports and higher profit margins for farmers, contributing to the development of rural areas. Environmental sustainability will improve, as reduced water and chemical usage leads to better soil health and conservation of water resources. Socially, improved agricultural practices will create job opportunities, support community development, and empower marginalised groups, including women and youth. The project prioritises ecological and financial sustainability for growers, ensuring the long-term viability of agricultural practices while maintaining economic profitability and hereby making farmers resilient against future agricultural challenges.
