About this project

The coastal belt, home to nearly 38 million people, illustrates the compounding effects of climate change on agriculture. Rising sea levels are driving salinity intrusion into groundwater and soils. This project proposes a targeted two-year pilot to demonstrate the commercial and social viability of protected horticulture in saline-prone coastal districts by establishing 11 polyhouses for both vegetable crop production and seedling nurseries, and providing training. Protected horticulture, through low-cost polyhouses, shade nets, and other controlled-environment systems, offers a promising next step in climate-smart agriculture. These technologies shield crops from salinity, pests, and unpredictable weather while enabling year-round cultivation of high value produce. The aim of this project is to increase the adoption of protected horticulture technologies among smallholder and medium farmers, enhance farmers’ incomes and productivity, strengthen private sector engagement and market linkage to ensure sustainability and improve financial access.
