About this project
The project aims to develop a 200 to 500 hectare agrohub around the Grootvlei Horticulture Expertise Facility (GHEF) in the Dipaleseng municipality, South Africa. This initiative builds on Phase 1 of the Grootvlei combi-track, which established a horticultural demonstration facility, highlighting the region's potential for climate-smart, labour-intensive agriculture and wetlands protection. The agrohub addresses critical challenges in food security and economic sustainability by repurposing land formerly used for coal energy production into productive agricultural space. This transition aims to create sustainable job opportunities and support local communities in accessing fresh, nutritious food.Through stakeholder engagement and thorough market research, the project will identify viable crops and value-added agricultural practices. It will establish a phased development plan that incorporates processing, storage, and logistics facilities, thereby enhancing local agricultural production and connecting farmers to broader markets in Johannesburg and Pretoria.By aligning with the "Just Energy Transition" programme, the project not only fosters economic development but also promotes environmental sustainability in the Grootvlei region (48,000 hectare catchment area). The ultimate goal is to create a thriving agricultural hub that empowers local communities, improves food security, protects the wetlands system and serves as a model for similar initiatives across South Africa.
