About this project

The Indian vegetable seed sector has experienced profound transformation over the past five decades, evolving from a state-controlled, traditional system to a dynamic, innovation-driven industry. Throughout the transformation period over decades, the role of seed policy has been pivotal in shaping not only industry dynamics but also influencing farmer decision-making, cropping patterns, and dietary availability of vegetables across regions. However, gaps remain in measuring long-term impacts at the farm and nutrition level, and in understanding the sustainability trade-offs related to the adoption of high-input dependent hybrid varieties. The study done within this project will assess the impact, both intended and unintended, of key policy interventions on the growth and transformation of India’s vegetable seed sector from 1970 until now. The study will analyse outcomes across economic, nutritional, equity, market transformation and environmental dimension, and present actionable recommendations for future policy and sectoral development. The outcomes will provide objective, evidence-based valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders, and researchers, and serve as a foundation for future growth and innovation in India’s vegetable seed sector.
