About this project

The purpose of this project is to gain a better understanding of how Dutch protected horticulture technologies contribute to both water efficiency and total water use in protected horticulture production sites. While many Dutch innovations improve ‘crop per drop’, overall water consumption may still increase due to intensification of production. This study aims to quantify water efficiency and total water use across different levels of horticulture technologies, and to validate the findings with data and experts opinions.Since the same holds for use of chemicals and energy, the second objective is to gain more understanding in efficiency of chemical use (fertilisers and pesticides) and total use of chemicals, and energy efficiency and total use of energy. Also, because a potential trade off exist between various environmental pressures: less water use may lead to more energy consumption. This study takes a sector approach by looking at different greenhouse technologies, but acknowledges that a landscape approach is needed for sound water management in the river basin. Recommendations of this project should include this reflection, and should address how the results could be interpreted in a landscape approach.
