About this project

The purpose of this project is to gain better understanding of best practices to increase biodiversity in (intensive) protected horticulture. Various production certificates (e.g. On the Way to PlanetProof (OPP)) require that horticultural farms establish and maintain a certain minimum of natural vegetation to increase agro biodiversity. In recent years, interesting results have been achieved in Spanish horticulture, showing positive effects on business cases as well. Little is known yet about the practical implications of establishing agroecology in horticulture in Northern African regions. The objective of this project is to translate the positive results on biodiversity of Spanish farms into specific guidelines for farmers in horticulture in Northern Africa. Primary focus will be on Morocco, and to a lesser extent Egypt and Senegal.
