Demonstration BISCOW

About this project

NUVAN International B.V. (NUVAN) develops animal feed supplements/formulas. The company has developed pressed cakes (the BISCOW) that can be given to dairy cows as a supplement to regular feed and that are specifically suitable for smaller farmers who feed their cattle manually. The product contains a high level of urea which ensures that the feed is better digested and absorbed. The dairy sector is large in Kenya and mainly in the hands of small livestock farmers (80%); a large part of the dairy cows are kept as 'backyard farming' and the knowledge level of the individual cattle farmer is often still low. For small-scale farmers a balanced diet for their cattle is often one of the limitations. The BISCOW could be a high-quality addition and have a positive influence on the general health and milk production of cows in Kenya. The demonstration project will have to show that BISCOW is effective and profitable under local conditions (nutrition, genetics, management) and therefore leads to extra milk production per day and that the payback period is fast so that the proceeds can be reinvested in the purchase of new BISCOW cakes. For this project, NUVAN wants to collaborate with MyFugo, an organisation that provides microfinancing (among other things to finance cows) and technical assistance to small-scale farmers and that has a large network.
