About this project
Holland Bioproducts B.V. (HBP) specialises in the development and production of biodegradable substrates – a sustainable alternative to conventional substrates such as rock wool, peat, and coconut fiber – and packaging materials based on natural jute fibers and biodegradable PLA flakes. The product lines – the Blue Line (growing substrates) and Orange Line (packaging materials) – were developed with water conservation, waste reduction, and extended shelf life in the supply chain in mind. Kenyan greenhouse horticulture companies and exporters are still (often) unfamiliar with these compostable, jute-based substrates and packaging solutions. Demand for compostable packaging and circular cultivation methods is growing rapidly in export markets. Therefore, HBP wants to set up demonstrations in various parts of the chain (cultivation and distribution) and demonstrate that the two production lines, under the specific cultivation and infrastructure conditions in Kenya, constitute sustainable, efficient and scalable alternatives to conventional substrates and plastic packaging materials currently used in Kenya.
