EnDev Innovation Window: Pilot solar Irrigation and input bundle for new customers

About this project

SunCulture proposes an innovative bundled solution that combines its solar irrigation systems with upfront input financing for first-time smallholder customers in Kenya. Most smallholders currently lack the capital to access both technologies and inputs simultaneously, and conventional credit models often exclude them due to lack of collateral or financial history. This project builds on SunCulture’s Kilimo Boost pilot, in which farmers use vouchers to access inputs through a digital agri-dealer inventory management platform called iPOS. The project will expand this offering to new customers, leveraging SunCulture’s PAYG irrigation system as a form of enforceable collateral via its remote lock/unlock feature. With funding from EnDev, SunCulture will financially de-risk this expansion, testing repayment behaviour, operational feasibility, and farmer productivity outcomes when bundled irrigation and input financing is offered at first contact. The pilot will aim to reach 1149 first-time smallholder farmers, generating scalable learnings on market entry, repayment behaviour, and customer outcomes.
